While doing a morning shoot very close the restaurant and picnic area on the north beaches of Cape Foulwind, this weka wandered into the picture on cue.
This large brown flightless bird of the rail family is endemic to New Zealand. They are feisty and curious and this made them an easy meal for Māori and early European settlers.
They are also known as the Maori hen or woodhen [Gallirallus australis]
